Which Chain Should You Trade NFTs On?
The chain decides which marketplaces you can use, what gas costs, and where the liquidity actually sits. Pick the chain first; the venue follows.
The short version
- Ethereum mainnet — the deepest art and collectibles liquidity (OpenSea, Blur, SuperRare, LooksRare). Highest gas costs; best for higher-value trades where a few dollars of gas is noise.
- Solana — fast and cheap; the centre of gravity for collectibles and trading culture. Magic Eden and Tensor live here. Wallet tooling differs from Ethereum (Phantom, not MetaMask).
- Base and other Ethereum L2s — same wallets and tooling as Ethereum, much cheaper gas, thinner liquidity. Zora minting activity is concentrated on Base and Zora’s own L2.
- Immutable (zkEVM / Immutable X) — purpose-built for game assets; protocol-enforced royalties and a shared orderbook across venues. Sydney-founded — the most AU-relevant chain ecosystem in the registry.
- Polygon, Avalanche, Blast, others — covered by aggregators and multi-chain venues (OpenSea, Rarible, OKX), but check per-chain liquidity on the venue before committing; “supported” doesn’t mean “liquid”.
How to choose in practice
- Follow the asset. The chain is usually decided for you — a collection lives on one chain (or its bridge). If you’re browsing rather than buying a specific asset, start where your asset class is densest (see the categories and chains columns in the directory).
- Price the gas into the trade. A $50 purchase on Ethereum mainnet can lose a meaningful share to gas; the same trade on Solana or an L2 costs cents. Small trades belong on cheap chains.
- Check wallet requirements. Every venue in our registry requires a wallet; make sure yours supports the chain (MetaMask won’t do Solana). See each profile’s wallet row.
- Multi-chain venues help compare, not eliminate choice. OpenSea and Rarible list across many chains — you still pay that chain’s gas and need that chain’s funds.
Bottom line
There’s no “best chain” — there’s the chain your asset lives on and the gas you’re willing to pay. Use the directory to see which venues cover which chains, and how fees stack up once gas is included.
